This beautiful running surface
is not just a handsome showpiece, |
|
![]() The finished running surface is a work of art. The lanes are numbered, relay points set, beautiful! |
![]() This pretty face started out an ugly duckling as glue is applied to the track's asphalt surface. This helps to fix the granular rubber paving that will follow. |
![]() The electrically operated paver lays a paved-in-place polyurethane bound black rubber mat for optimum shock absorption and energy return. |
![]() Project foreman Francisco Morales operates the brusher spreading the red rubber dust. After this a sealer will be applied followed by a coat of larger rubber granules that will add density to the track. |
![]() More than one pass is required for the paver to cover the full width of the track. Bags of fine red rubber dust granules will then be applied for color. |
![]() Once the fine rubber 'dust' is scattered over the entire surface, Francisco operates a brushing machine that evenly distributes the colored granules into mix. |
![]() A final application of glue is placed on the track before the granular topping (see insert) is smoothed into place. This is a far cry from the old dirt track. It creates a great running surface. |
![]() Unsung heroes who keep the sports arena standing tall throughout the year are sport's groundskeepers Jeff Fernandes (right) and Richard Sousa (insert). Attention sports fans, please pick up your own trash! |
![]() This beautiful life size sculpture of the Mustang accentuates the north end of the sports arena. |
![]() As to what future champion or Olympian will begin their quest on this very track to become the best they can be, only time will tell. |
